# New Run

The *"New Run"* dialog lets you record a new sprint run for an athlete.

## Dialog Content

The dialog contains the following

1. Mode selector. The default is *Distance* which is suitable for most use cases but other options are available. See below for details.
2. Direction selector. This is specified in the exercise library and the default is Auto which is suitable for most situations.
3. Distance selector. Specify how long the athlete should move before the run is complete.
4. Tape measure button. Click this to open a new dialog that can be used to measure distances in the field (see below)
5. Begin button. Click this when the athlete is at the start position and ready to run.

When **Begin** is pressed, the dialog will start listening to movements and the run will start as soon as the athlete moves far enough and fast enough in the configured direction.

## Tape Measure

The *Tape Measure* is there to assist the setup of markers (turning points, start position, finish line) on the field in preparation before the exercise.

## Left/Right Side

*Only available if the exercise type has been configured to enable this functionality*

With this option it's possible to tag a run with a starting side. For example, to specify the leading foot of a running or which direction the athlete was moving during a side shuffle.

The selected side will be shown in the run list, and the color of the chart will use the corresponding left or right color (same as for repetition type exercises).

> **Note:** The exact meaning of the selected side is up to the user to define. The software does not really use this value other than displaying it, and also use it to label the steps in the "[Left/Right Analysis](/v1/docs/left-right-analysis)" tool.

## Modes

There are three modes available

1. **Distance:** In this mode, the measurements start as soon as the client is moving above a certain speed and continues until the client has moved the specified distance.
2. **Auto:** In this mode, start is the same as distance, but the measurements will stop as soon as the client stops moving.
3. **Custom:** In this mode, start and stop conditions can be fully customized to create completely new forms of testing

### Custom Mode

In *custom mode*, the start and stop conditions can be freely picked and combined

Start conditions:

- Auto: same start condition as used in *Distance* and *Auto* modes. Measurement is triggered when the client moves at a certain speed
- Position: the measurement starts when the client crosses a certain position. The position is expressed in a distance (meters or yards) from the calibration point.
  - Tip: Use the *Tape Measure* to accurately place cones or other markers on the field on the correct position
- Manual: measurements are started as soon as *Begin* is pressed regardless of client position or speed.

Stop conditions:

- Auto: same as mode *Auto* above. Measurement stops when the client stops.
- Distance: same as mode *Distance* above. Measurement stops when the client has moved the configured distance since the start of measurements.
- Time: collect measurements for a certain time and then stop.
- Manual: collect measurements until the *stop* button is pressed
